RV Daily: Canyon Water and Connected Rigs

October 3 RV news: Grand Canyon water limits, the Harvest Hosts deal, connected rigs, Dinosaur access and Lake Roosevelt’s campfire change.

The RV Dummies editorial team · Published · Updated

October begins with a practical question for RV travelers: does the service you are counting on actually exist for this trip? At Grand Canyon, a campground listing does not mean water service has returned. At Dinosaur, storm damage has changed access to two camping areas. Meanwhile, a major hotel company has agreed to enter the RV-membership business, and connected technology is headed toward more trailers.

This is the October 3 edition. If one of these parks is on your route, check the facilities and access before the travel day. The business announcements are worth a look before a purchase or renewal, too. We've kept the announcement and event dates with each story so you can see when things changed.

Grand Canyon: plan around the water restrictions still in force

Grand Canyon’s South Rim remains a place to visit, but an October RV stay needs more planning than an old campground description suggests. The National Park Service operations page, updated September 30 and checked for this edition, lists Trailer Village RV Campground as closed until further notice under Stage 4 water restrictions. Mather and Desert View are operating for dry camping only. Camper Services, including the showers and laundry, is also closed, and outdoor wood fires are prohibited at those campgrounds. Desert View’s published season ends October 18.

This is continuing disruption after the August and September floods, not a newly announced October closure. The park’s recovery page, updated October 1, still describes tentative restoration milestones: pumping from the Bright Angel Creek intake could begin by November 16, with water distribution to residents potentially starting by Thanksgiving. Neither estimate is a confirmed reopening date for your RV reservation. The page also describes water and hygiene assistance for residents; visitors should not treat those community services as substitutes for normal campground amenities.

If you have a reservation, call the operator and ask whether your stay can go ahead and which facilities will be working when you arrive. For a dry-camping stay, work out your drinking-water supply, tank capacity and off-site resupply before entering the park. Don't rely on an old hookups description to make that plan. We'd line up a workable overnight alternative outside the affected facilities and confirm availability before changing the original booking. The stay needs to fit the services you can actually get.

Choice Hotels announces an agreement to buy Harvest Hosts

Choice Hotels announced September 30 that it had agreed to acquire Harvest Hosts from Stripes and other shareholders. The company described an all-cash transaction with an enterprise value of approximately $130 million.

Choice says Harvest Hosts will keep its name and operate as a standalone business, with Joel Holland continuing as CEO. Its announcement expected the transaction to close October 1, subject to customary conditions. We did not verify a later primary-source closing confirmation before publication, so this edition reports the agreement rather than presenting the projected date as proof that the deal closed. The release discusses growth and loyalty opportunities, but does not set out a new member price, a hotel-parking entitlement or a specific rewards redemption benefit.

Before buying or renewing, we'd check the membership terms against the stops we'd actually use. Harvest Hosts' current host guidance provides the first overnight parking stay without a camping charge, but optional hookups and additional nights may have disclosed fees. Members are also encouraged to support the host with a purchase, which is separate from the membership price. Read the individual location's profile and confirm the arrangements before treating the stop as free camping.

The ownership announcement is worth following, but we'd base today's purchase on today's benefits. Compare the plan with your route, the hosts you want to visit and the costs at those stops. New loyalty or hotel benefits belong in that calculation once the companies announce exactly what members can use.

RoadTech Connect moves toward 2027 Forest River models

Forest River’s Columbus, River Ranch and PUMA brands are introducing RoadTech Connect, according to company-release coverage published by RVBusiness on October 2. RoadTech’s own site identifies model year 2027 as the RV-market launch. The platform is intended to connect information from supported vehicle systems with owners and, when owners consent, the dealers and manufacturers helping them.

The described functions include system monitoring, alerts and location services. RoadTech presents the wider idea as a way to give service teams better information about a problem before they begin sorting it out. Those are manufacturer descriptions of what the platform is designed to do, not results from our own testing. The participating brands’ eligible models, feature packages and availability have not yet been fully announced. Shoppers should not read the introduction as a promise that every 2027 unit from all three brands includes the same equipment.

Ask a dealer to show you what the system does on the exact trailer you're considering. Which systems can you monitor? What happens when you lose connectivity? Who receives an alert, and what are you expected to do next? We'd also ask about ongoing charges and the controls for sharing location or diagnostic information. Keep the answers with the model and equipment details so you can compare one actual rig with another.

An alert is useful when you know what to do with it. Before relying on the system, find out what you can safely check yourself, when to call the dealer and who handles the repair. Those answers will tell you more about living with the technology than a long feature list.

Dinosaur storm damage changes two camping routes

NPS’s October 2 update says Rainbow Park Campground and its access road have been closed since September 25 after storm damage. Repairs are expected to keep them closed through spring 2027, but that timing could change. The closed road runs from Island Park Road to the campground and boat ramp.

Echo Park Campground is also inaccessible to motor vehicles: its road is closed from Chew Ranch to the campground, with repairs underway and no reopening date listed.

Green River Campground remains open on a first-come, first-served basis until mid-October. Drinking water is available, but there are no RV water hookups.

Before substituting another campground, check its access road, closing date and space availability. Keep a backup stop: an open campground may fill before you arrive.

Lake Roosevelt lifts its campfire ban, with limits still attached

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area lifted its campfire ban at 12:01 a.m. October 2, following a September 29 NPS announcement. Fires are permitted in established campground and day-use fire rings and on lakeshores below the high-water mark.

Beach fires must be smaller than three feet across, on bare ground and at least ten feet from vegetation, structures and beach logs. Do not build rock rings or dig pits. Burning treated or painted wood, wood containing nails or staples, and household garbage is prohibited. Attend every fire and extinguish it fully with water before leaving or sleeping.

Bring enough water for extinguishing the fire and check current posted rules on arrival. This announcement applies to Lake Roosevelt; verify restrictions separately at other stops.
