RV Daily: New Models and Safer Fall Trips

October 8 RV news: 2027 award contenders, Jacksonville’s show, REDWorks power panels, battery safety, Smokies elk and Okefenokee access.

The RV Dummies editorial team · Published · Updated

Fall RV plans are taking shape on two fronts: new rigs to walk through and outdoor stops that need a closer look before you go. Jacksonville’s fall show starts today, RVBusiness has named its 2027 award contenders, and a new power-panel announcement gives off-grid builders another option to compare. On the travel side, the latest Smokies and Okefenokee updates call for changes to wildlife-viewing and paddling plans.

Here’s our October 8 roundup, with the announcement dates kept separate from the dates you’ll need on your calendar.

2027 RV awards: 62 honorees, 10 finalists

RVBusiness announced its 2027 RV of the Year selections on October 7 after reviewing units at Hershey and the Elkhart RV Open House. The announcement recognizes 62 models across its categories. Ten are finalists for the overall award, with the winner due in the magazine’s November–December issue in mid-November.

The finalists include the Airstream Stetson + 6666 27FB, Alliance Aurum 38FB, ATC Hom 600, Axiom Avora 3810 and Brinkley Model R 3710. The other five are Coachmen Remote 228RBH, Forest River Teleos 25.RD, Renegade Explorer TS 42RB, Thor Motor Coach Magnitude/Omni C33 and Winnebago Elora/Resa 19DC.

Use the list to pick a few worthwhile walkthroughs. RVBusiness describes its selection process as subjective and considers new introductions, meaningful redesigns, value and differentiation. An award can put a model on your radar; your own camping routine still decides whether it belongs on your shortlist. At a walkthrough, take notes on the exact floorplan and options shown so you can compare the same configuration later. A familiar model name can cover more than one arrangement.

Jacksonville’s fall RV show starts today

The Jacksonville Fall RV Show runs October 8–11 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, 13611 Normandy Boulevard. The organizer lists hours of 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday, all local time. Adult admission is $10, children 16 and younger enter free, and parking is free.

Thursday brings a $2 senior admission discount; the organizer also lists a $2 community-heroes discount throughout the show. Discounts cannot be combined. The participating-dealer list includes Blue Compass RV, Campers Inn of Jacksonville, D&H RV Center, General RV Center and RV Club USA. Check with a participating dealer before making a special trip for one particular model, because the dealer list does not promise that every rig you want will be on display.

For a useful visit, choose two or three everyday tasks to try in each contender: preparing a meal, getting dressed and reaching the bathroom during a travel stop. Ask staff to demonstrate anything that requires moving a slide or operating equipment. Photograph the model label before the interior so your notes stay attached to the right RV.

The next two FRVTA fall shows are Tampa Bay, November 5–8 at the Florida State Fairgrounds, and West Palm Beach, November 12–15 at the South Florida Fairgrounds. West Palm Beach currently lists free admission and parking. Tampa lists a $5 adult admission plus separate parking charges, so budget those separately and recheck the event page before leaving.

REDWorks packages the charging hardware

REDARC’s October 6 announcement introduces its REDWorks power-panel lineup as a prewired way to combine charging, monitoring and related power-management components. The company says the Scout25, Nomad50 and Pioneer50 are available through REDARC and participating partners, with higher-output QuickFit options also offered. This is a manufacturer announcement; we have not independently tested the panels.

The starting Scout25 pairs a 25-amp BCDC Core25 charger with a Smart Battery Monitor. REDARC describes the Nomad50 as a 50-amp option with monitoring and start-battery recovery, while the Pioneer50 adds TVMS Rogue and a RedVision Pro display for centralized control. Those differences matter more than buying the largest number on the label: decide whether you need straightforward charging information or control of several connected devices.

For an existing RV, ask an installer to map the proposed panel against the equipment you already own. Bring the battery model, current charger and solar-controller details, plus a list of the appliances you expect to run. Clarify what the quoted package includes and what remains separate, including batteries, solar panels, an inverter and installation. A prewired panel still has to fit into the rest of the electrical system.

REDARC’s Scout25 product page recommends installation by a qualified auto electrician or technician. That is a useful part of the buying decision: compare the complete installed plan and its compatibility with your rig before comparing panel prices alone.

Give Smokies elk room during the rut

Great Smoky Mountains National Park issued an October 7 warning after several visitors were injured getting too close to elk. Fall is mating season, or the rut, and the park says elk can be particularly aggressive. The warning matters for anyone adding an elk-viewing stop to a fall camping trip.

In this park, stay at least 25 yards, or 75 feet, from elk and farther away whenever your presence changes an animal’s behavior. If an elk approaches, calmly move away to maintain that space. The fields around Oconaluftee and Cataloochee are closed to visitors during the rut, and rangers’ and volunteers’ directions still apply even when other people are standing closer.

Plan the parking before the photograph. NPS directs visitors to designated pull-offs with the vehicle completely clear of the road. If your full rig will not fit, keep moving rather than leaving a trailer or rear corner in traffic. Binoculars let you enjoy the view without edging closer, and the park asks visitors to report wildlife conflicts to a ranger.

This update concerns wildlife behavior and field access. It does not announce a blanket campground closure. Keep your camping reservation and road-access checks separate, and give yourself permission to skip a crowded viewing stop when there is no sensible place to pull over.

A charging check for Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, and the National Park Service’s October 2 safety article focuses on lithium-ion devices. It cites recent incidents involving a boat at Glen Canyon, an audio-tour player at Alcatraz and an e-bike at Grand Canyon. Those incidents occurred on different dates; the article is a safety reminder, not a report of one new park-wide emergency.

Before the next trip, match each rechargeable device with its original or manufacturer-approved charger. NPS advises charging on a hard surface, staying with devices while they charge and unplugging when fully charged. Large devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters should be charged outside, with exits kept clear. At camp, choose that charging spot deliberately rather than putting a bike wherever the nearest cord happens to reach.

Stop using a device that becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, smokes or makes hissing or popping sounds. Keep the exit route usable, including the narrow space by your RV door. If a battery starts smoking or burning, get people away and call emergency services instead of trying to keep using or charging it.

The U.S. Fire Administration adds another useful check: look for product recalls and recognized testing-laboratory certification when choosing devices. Its guidance also says lithium-ion batteries do not belong in ordinary trash or recycling bins; ask local authorities where used batteries should go. Keep these portable-device precautions alongside the separate instructions for your RV’s installed battery and charging system.

Original Fire Prevention Week card advises using the approved charger, charging on a hard surface while nearby, keeping exits clear and charging e-bikes outside.

Check Okefenokee’s water route first

If your RV trip includes paddling at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, check the route before building a day or overnight outing around it. The refuge’s October 7 conditions update says low water continues to affect water trails and paddle-in campsites. Even as levels rise, staff must inspect routes and remove hazards before more access can reopen.

The update lists Coffee Bay and Canal Run as available camping platforms from Suwannee Canal Recreation Area near Folkston, and Mixons Hammock from the state-park entrance near Fargo. Other paddle-in campsites remain temporarily closed. Permitted trips must start and finish at the same entrance, and reservations can still be changed or canceled as conditions require.

The refuge also says its camping-permit phone line is scheduled to reopen October 8 after a one-day interruption. We have not independently confirmed that the line has resumed answering. Use the current refuge notice when checking your route, entrance and permit. These restrictions concern paddle-in camping and water access; check the operator of your separate RV campsite for its own status before changing that reservation.
