RV Daily: Canyon Dates and Lance’s New Slide

October 14 RV news: North Rim deadlines, Black Canyon water shutoffs, Lance’s 1191 Slide and RVWA training dates worth checking.

The RV Dummies editorial team · Published

Tomorrow is an important date for two very different canyon trips. Grand Canyon’s North Rim is approaching a campground season end and a scenic-road closure, while Black Canyon of the Gunnison is preparing to shut off another campground water system. Neither update means the whole park is closing, but either could change where you sleep or refill.

Also in this October 14 roundup: Lance’s new slide-equipped 1191 puts travel-stop access in the spotlight, and women considering RV systems training have an October scholarship deadline. We found conflicting details in both the camper specifications and the training calendar, so we explain what needs confirming before you commit.

Three North Rim dates: campground and General Store season ends October 15; Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads close sunset October 15 through sunrise November 3; recovery comments remain open through November 6.

North Rim: tomorrow changes the trip

Check your North Rim itinerary now if it runs into the second half of October. Grand Canyon’s current status page says the North Rim Campground and General Store operate through October 15. Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road then close from sunset October 15 through sunrise November 3 for repair and rehabilitation. That is a closure of those scenic roads, not an announcement that all North Rim access ends tomorrow.

The broader North Rim season is listed through November 30 or the first major snowstorm. Services have their own limits: the park’s gas station is already closed, and the campground has no water or RV hookups. A fall visit needs a confirmed overnight stop and a water-and-fuel plan before you drive in. Don’t use a park-opening date as a substitute for checking the individual services your trip depends on.

There is a longer-term decision underway too. NPS opened public involvement on North Rim recovery concepts October 6, following the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire and subsequent recovery challenges. The agency’s announcement and planning portal both identify November 6 as the comment deadline. The work considers visitor facilities, utilities, operations and the area’s historic and natural character; it is an early concept process, not a finished construction plan.

For RV travelers who want to comment, a useful contribution would describe a specific need and why it matters: clear information about accessible campsites, dependable arrival information, or how limited services affect an overnight visit. Read the proposed concepts first, then distinguish what you experienced from what you would like to see. The planning process does not reopen a road, restore a water supply or change this week’s campground dates.

Black Canyon: an open campsite may have no water

Black Canyon of the Gunnison’s camping page, updated October 13, says the South Rim and East Portal water systems have already been shut off for winter. North Rim water is scheduled to shut off October 15. If you are camping there this week, build the trip around arriving with the potable water you need rather than expecting a working campground tap.

Camping availability is also more limited than a general park listing might suggest. NPS reports 25 reopened South Rim campsites, all non-electric, with other areas still affected by the 2025 South Rim Fire. South Rim sites require reservations year-round. North Rim and East Portal use first-come, first-served sites with Recreation.gov Scan & Pay; download the app before arrival because connectivity is limited. East Portal currently lists only its upper sites as open.

The separate conditions page lists South Rim Road, North Rim Road and East Portal Road as open. It also flags wet or muddy trails after rain or snow and uneven ground and blowing ash on some fire-affected trails. These are current condition reports, not a promise about weather later in your stay. Check again near departure and keep the route to your chosen campground separate from the sightseeing plan.

East Portal deserves an extra pause before following a navigation app downhill. Its official page prohibits vehicles longer than 22 feet, including a trailer, on the access road, which has a 16 percent grade and sharp, narrow curves. An open-road label does not override that restriction. Choose a campsite and route that work for your full rig, and identify a legitimate water fill and disposal stop outside the park before you need one.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison water update: South Rim and East Portal water already shut off for winter; North Rim water shutoff scheduled October 15; open roads do not guarantee RV suitability.

Lance’s 1191 Slide: check access and exact specs

Lance’s slide-equipped 1191 received a detailed introduction in Truck Camper Magazine on October 13, including an interview with Lance national sales manager Gary Conley. The notable design claim is practical: the bathroom, kitchen, refrigerator and cabover remain accessible with the slide retracted. Conley says units are shipping. That is manufacturer-supplied information, not a road test by The RV Dummies or a guarantee that a particular dealer has one in stock.

Travel-stop access is worth putting on your walkthrough list. Ask to see the exact camper with the slide fully in, then check whether you can comfortably reach the things you use during a lunch stop. Look at the doorway, refrigerator swing and route to the bathroom with your normal travel gear in mind. A floorplan can show where a cabinet sits without showing whether the arrangement works well for you.

Be particularly careful about weight figures. Lance’s current general 1191 page lists both slide and non-slide availability but shows a 3,425-pound dry weight. In the new interview, Conley gives 3,930 pounds as the slide version’s base weight, while the story’s introductory specifications list 3,589 pounds. Those numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. Obtain the specification sheet and weight label for the precise configuration you are considering rather than choosing the most favorable number.

Lance’s compatibility guide says truck configuration, installed options, passengers, gear, tank contents and any trailer tongue weight all affect the match. It recommends weighing an existing truck and comparing its remaining capacity with the camper load. A roomy interior is only part of the buying decision: ask the dealer to document the loaded truck-and-camper match, including axle limits, before turning a floorplan preference into an order.

RV systems training: a deadline and a date mismatch

RV Women’s Alliance training is worth a look for women working toward a technical role or a stronger understanding of the systems they handle in parts, warranty or customer service. An October 13 RVBusiness report highlights enrollment for upcoming hybrid classes. RVWA’s own class page confirms a Level 1 course beginning November 2, a Level 2 course beginning January 4, 2027, and another Level 1 course beginning February 15, 2027.

Before booking travel, resolve a calendar mismatch with the organizer. The October 13 report says the November course runs through December 18, with its in-person portion December 14–18. The official class page we checked instead lists November 2–December 11. We cannot reconcile those end dates from the published information. The start date agrees, but the final week is exactly the detail that affects lodging, work schedules and travel.

The official program combines online study with an in-person lab and testing component in Elkhart, Indiana. It is more of a commitment than watching a few owner-maintenance videos, and certification requires passing the relevant exams. The January Level 2 listing requires completed Level 1 certification. Applicants should confirm eligibility, the current schedule, what the fee includes and which expenses remain their responsibility directly with RVWA.

The Bill Stewart Scholarship has an October 31 application deadline for the fourth quarter and lists November 30 for acceptance or denial notices. That notification date falls after the November class begins. Do not assume a pending scholarship application will fund the opening weeks of that class; ask how the award timing applies to your chosen session. RVWA says selected scholarships can be used within one full calendar year, which may make a later course the more workable choice.
