RV Daily: Storm Closures and Winter Camping
October 19 RV news: Hatteras storm closures, Moraine Park winter camping, Grant Grove trails, Airelume towing numbers and Fuel Vault fitment.
The RV Dummies editorial team · Published
Check the destination before you hitch up this Monday. Cape Hatteras camping remains closed in the latest storm update, while Rocky Mountain National Park changes to its winter camping setup today. In Kings Canyon, a prescribed-fire plan affects several popular Grant Grove walks. Those are three different reasons to revisit a fall itinerary, even when a reservation or last week’s park page still looks familiar.
For RV shoppers and owners, we also have a fresh look at Forest River’s Airelume 325 and a distribution update for a locking fuel-door accessory. Here’s what matters for your next decision, with announcement dates separated from the dates when changes take effect.
Cape Hatteras camping stays closed
Keep a mainland alternative in your plans if you were heading for Cape Hatteras. The National Park Service’s October 18 update for October 19 operations says all Seashore campgrounds, off-road vehicle routes and lighthouse climbing remain closed. It also says Hatteras Island is inaccessible to nonresident visitors under Dare County’s evacuation order, while suspended ferry service prevents access to Ocracoke. The notice does not provide a campground reopening date.
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial have a separate reopening plan for 9 a.m. October 19. Treat that as a site-specific announcement. It does not make an island campsite available or establish that your route is passable. The Seashore’s beach-access page also continues to display a storm-closure notice for all ORV ramps.
Dare County’s visitor evacuation took effect October 16 at 8 p.m. Its guidance tells people with upcoming Hatteras reservations to contact their accommodation provider, adjust their plans and avoid traveling toward the island while the order remains in effect. Check the county’s current reentry information and official road and ferry updates before resuming the trip.
For an RV itinerary, work through the whole chain: permission to enter, a usable road or ferry, and an operating campground. A change to one link does not settle the other two. Ask your campground how it is handling your particular booking rather than assuming a closure automatically establishes a refund, a replacement site or a new arrival date.

Moraine Park changes seasons today
Rocky Mountain National Park’s previously announced winter camping season begins October 19 at 1 p.m., park-local time. Summer camping at Moraine Park ends at noon. Moraine Park then becomes the park’s only open campground, with winter sites available first come, first served. This is a change taking effect today, rather than a new announcement issued this morning.
For winter RV stays, the park lists electric sites in Loops B and C and no water hookups at individual campsites. A fresh-water fill and dump station remain available. Standard nightly fees are $30 for a non-electric site and $55 for an electric site, separate from park admission. The park accepts cashless payments and lists both Recreation.gov Scan & Pay and entrance-station payment options.
Arrival planning matters as much as the equipment list. A first-come campground cannot give you the same assurance as a confirmed reserved site, so pick a fallback before driving into the park. If electricity is important to your cold-weather plan, an available non-electric space may not meet your needs. Do not build the trip around an assumption that the next site will have a pedestal.
Bring a shovel, too. The park says staff do not clear individual campsites, and campground-road plowing may be delayed while main roads receive priority. Leave yourself daylight to evaluate the site and decide whether to stay. A listed open campground still requires a rig and a crew prepared for the conditions.

Grant Grove walks need a fresh check
Check the specific trail you want to walk before making Grant Grove the centerpiece of a Kings Canyon day trip. An October 16 NPS release announced a weather-dependent, 482-acre prescribed burn planned to begin October 17, with several access restrictions taking effect over the following days. The announcement is a burn plan; it is not confirmation that ignition occurred.
The notice places the Grant Grove Day Ride Loop closure on October 17. General Grant Tree Trail, North Grove Loop Trail and Grant Tree Road closures begin October 18, followed by portions of the Sunset Trail on October 19. Reopening depends on hazards being cleared and conditions being safe, with no fixed reopening date supplied.
The practical issue is easy to miss when checking a broad park page. The general conditions page was last updated October 13 and still described Grant Grove trails as open. Use the newer, specific burn notice when planning these walks, then check for subsequent updates. An older general statement is not evidence that the listed restrictions have been lifted.
Smoke can affect visibility and air quality during and after the work. Check current local conditions and AirNow before setting out, and keep another outing in mind if a grove walk no longer suits the day. The burn release does not announce a campground closure. Confirm camping and trail access separately rather than treating the entire park as closed.

Airelume 325: check the truck and the layout
An October 16 RVBusiness post features ThatRVGirl’s walkthrough of Forest River’s 2027 Airelume 325. That is the date of the coverage, not a verified model-launch date. The manufacturer’s current floorplan shows a front bedroom, bunk beds, two slide-outs and two entrances, giving family-trailer shoppers a layout worth comparing with their usual camping routine.
Forest River lists an exterior length of 36 feet 11 inches, an unloaded vehicle weight of 7,813 pounds and a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,813 pounds. Published cargo capacity is 2,000 pounds, and the listed hitch weight is 1,090 pounds. Features include a 60-by-80-inch main bed, an outside kitchen with a sink and refrigerator, and washer/dryer preparation.
Those figures belong beside the floorplan on your shopping list. Published unloaded weight is not the weight of a particular trailer ready for a trip. Forest River says each unit receives its own weight and cargo-capacity label, so ask to see that label on the trailer you might buy. Water, belongings and added equipment all need room in the weight budget.
Check your tow vehicle’s actual limits as well as the trailer’s rating. Ford’s towing guidance distinguishes vehicle, axle and combined ratings and explains that loaded tongue weight must be measured and kept within the vehicle and hitch limits. Use the guidance for your own truck, then account for its people and cargo. Also compare the nearly 37-foot trailer’s length with the campsites you actually use; extra indoor room changes the outdoor parking job.

Fuel Vault availability puts fitment first
An October 16 RVBusiness report names NTP-STAG, Keller Marine & RV and etrailer as supply channels for The RV Fuel Vault, a locking enclosure for compatible exposed fuel-fill points. The report describes several door configurations, including a round version for suitable onboard fuel ports on towable RVs. For owners considering one, the useful news is another route through the regular parts-and-service supply chain.
This is a distribution report rather than the product’s first appearance. The manufacturer’s September buying guide already listed NTP-STAG and etrailer, and distinguished dealer wholesale ordering from consumer retail purchases. Ask your usual parts department whether it can source the appropriate version, and compare that with a retail listing before arranging installation.
Fitment comes first. The manufacturer lists multiple motorhome chassis applications and describes a keyed enclosure that uses existing mounting points and tamper-resistant screws. Etrailer’s large-door listing, for example, specifies Ford E-350, E-450 and F53 applications. That example should not be read as one universal part for every RV mentioned in the broader distribution report.
Have the exact chassis year, make and model, fuel-port arrangement and required door count ready for the seller. Confirm current availability and delivery timing for the actual part before booking service. Treat the cover as an added access deterrent, not a guarantee against theft or contamination; the material reviewed does not establish that it defeats every attempt. A careful match to your coach is more useful than an appealing claim about how quickly an accessory can be installed.
