RV Daily: Free Visits, Rebates and Van Layouts
October 25 RV news: Tuesday’s federal fee-free visits, RVshare rebate details, a redesigned family van and a closer look at solar shutdown controls.
The RV Dummies editorial team · Published
A free-entry day and a rental rebate can help a trip’s budget, but neither replaces the details that make the trip work. This Sunday’s roundup looks ahead to October 27, checks the current RVshare offer, and examines two equipment stories with practical questions for owners and shoppers. The dates below distinguish upcoming events from the week’s reports, and manufacturer claims stay attributed rather than being presented as our own testing.
Tuesday’s fee-free visits need a real trip plan
Tuesday, October 27, is a useful date to put beside your next campground stop. The National Park Service lists Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday as an entrance-fee-free day for U.S. citizens and residents. Its current guidance makes the residency restriction explicit, so international visitors should not budget on a blanket free-entry promise. Timed-entry and reservation charges can still apply. The next listed NPS fee-free date is Veterans Day, November 11.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also lists October 27 as a free-admission day at its normally fee-charging lands. Its event page includes Florida destinations such as Merritt Island, St. Marks and J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling national wildlife refuges. That waiver does not erase concessionaire charges or permit fees for activities such as special tours. Treat the park and refuge announcements as two separate offers with their own operating details, rather than assuming every federal recreation expense disappears.
For an RV trip, the useful question is not simply whether admission is free. It is whether the stop fits the travel day you already have. Pick the specific entrance, confirm the hours and current alerts, and check parking for your full rig before committing to the detour. If you are already settled at camp, taking the smaller vehicle may make more sense than moving the RV for a short visit. An entrance waiver is not a campground reservation or permission to stay overnight.
Make a small Tuesday plan now: destination, arrival window, parking choice, any reservation, and a backup nearby. A family with an existing entrance pass may find little additional financial benefit, but can still use the date as a reason to explore somewhere new. Do the fuel and time calculation first. Driving a long way solely to avoid an entrance charge can turn a modest saving into a more expensive day.

RVshare’s fuel rebate is a later gift card
RVshare’s current promotion page offers a $50 gift card for eligible trips lasting five days or fewer and $70 for trips of six days or more. The page advertises trips booked and taken October 17 through November 17, 2026; its detailed terms say the reservation must start within that period. RVBusiness reported the program on October 22. This is a rental promotion, not a reduction in the posted price at a gas pump.
The official terms limit eligibility to U.S. residents aged 25 or older with an eligible RVshare rental and a valid U.S. mailing address. The claim must be submitted within seven days after the rental ends, with one submission per reservation and matching reservation information. Funding is limited and available on a first-come basis. No minimum mileage is required, and the FAQ says driving the RV is not required. Check the current terms against your particular reservation before relying on eligibility.
The payment timing deserves attention. Although the introductory copy talks about sending the gift card after the promotion ends, the detailed terms say generally within 12 weeks, with verification potentially taking longer. We would budget the trip without that money and treat an approved rebate as a later benefit. Save the terms that apply when you book, keep your reservation details, and put the claim deadline on your calendar rather than expecting an automatic credit.
There is also no reason to add a rental day just to move from the $50 tier to the $70 tier. That is only a $20 difference. Compare it with the complete extra-day cost, including any campground and rental charges, before changing plans. The better use of this offer is to reduce the eventual cost of a trip that already works for your family, not to let a small incentive choose the itinerary.

A new family van puts the bed layout first
Off Highway Van announced its 2027 lineup on October 20, with a redesigned Doc Holliday as the headline. The builder says the model will use its expanding north-south bed rather than its previous side-to-side sleeping arrangement. Its own model-year article lists the expanded bed at 78 by 68 inches and describes a redesigned galley, larger water storage and additional finish choices. These are manufacturer descriptions, not measurements from an RV Dummies road test.
The company’s announcement describes both 144- and 170-wheelbase Sprinter versions. It lists seating for five to six in the shorter version and five to eight in the longer version, with sleeping capacity of four or more. A rooftop sleeping option is among the configurations. Seating and sleeping counts are different decisions: a brochure’s maximum passenger number does not tell you whether your own family can sleep comfortably, move around or store all its gear in that exact build.
For shoppers, this is a useful layout to examine in both daytime and bedtime form. Ask to see the bed fully extended, then check the route to the door, the space around the kitchen and where the bedding goes when the bed is stowed. Have the builder show the precise travel-seat configuration and the restraint information relevant to your passengers. If children will ride along, settle the approved seating and child-restraint compatibility questions before choosing cabinetry or upholstery.
We would also request a written specification for the actual van rather than compare maximum figures from different configurations. Include the water capacity, installed options, available cargo capacity and the equipment included in the quote. More storage is useful only when the items you bring fit within the vehicle’s limits. The practical advance here is another way to make one small interior do two jobs; whether it works better depends on your daily routine and the exact van you inspect.

Solar shutdown deserves its own handover
An October 23 RV News report highlights AIMS Power’s Rapid Solar Disconnect and Cable Entry Port system. The manufacturer’s current product page and PV-RSD1 instructions describe a remotely accessible solar shutdown control, including manual operation and automatic shutdown when its 12-volt control supply is absent. The manual also lists a lockout function. The point is to provide a defined way to control the solar feed without making a roof visit part of the normal shutdown procedure.
That is not the same as declaring the entire RV electrically safe. Batteries, shore power, an inverter and other sources need their own procedures. Ask the installer to explain exactly which conductors the solar disconnect controls and what remains energized. A switch label or an app reporting zero charging is not a substitute for a qualified person verifying a safe condition before electrical work. This is a product-development report, not a wiring tutorial or a recommendation to alter an existing system yourself.
The official instructions show that installation includes roof penetrations, appropriate sealing and mounting, and application-specific wiring. That makes the installation plan as important as the button’s location. Have a qualified installer check compatibility with your array and controller, choose a reachable location, and provide the exact manual and shutdown sequence for your finished installation. Do not treat a product’s availability as proof that it is suitable for every RV solar system.
The useful takeaway for any solar-equipped rig is a better handover. Know where the controls are, what each one isolates, and whom to call when the system behaves unexpectedly. Put that information with the rig’s manuals where another adult can find it. We have not independently tested this AIMS device, and we are not using the product announcement to declare a new compliance requirement for every existing RV. Owners should get the requirements for their particular installation from the manufacturer and qualified installer.
