RV Daily: Texas Visits and Hatteras Camping
November 1 RV news: free Texas day visits, Hatteras campground reopenings, a dated fuel-price check and the latest LCI merger decision.
The RV Dummies editorial team · Published
November opens with a useful distinction for travelers: an invitation to visit is not the same thing as a complete camping plan. Texas is offering free state-park day entry today, while two Cape Hatteras campgrounds have reopened after storm disruption. Both are welcome opportunities, but reservations, RV fit and local conditions still decide whether a stop works for your family.
We also look at AAA’s latest weekly gasoline update and a new decision in the proposed Patrick and LCI combination. The dates matter here. Today’s edition is November 1, 2026; the campground announcement and fuel report were issued October 29, and the corporate decision was announced October 30. None of those reports guarantees conditions, prices or service outcomes at your next stop.
Texas offers free state-park day entry today
Texas State Parks Day falls on Sunday, November 1. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department lists free visits at more than 85 state parks for this fourth annual event and recommends reserving a Save the Day pass for the park you choose. For RVers already nearby, that creates a good chance to explore somewhere new without adding the usual day-entry charge to the outing.
Reserve the visit before making the drive. TPWD’s day-pass guidance says parks can close to drop-in visitors once they reach capacity. Some parks also require an arrival window; arriving outside it can mean you cannot enter. A pass is specific to its named park and does not guarantee space in a particular parking lot or access to every day-use area. Free admission does not remove those practical limits.
Keep the overnight decision separate. A day-use pass is not a campsite reservation, so do not build tonight’s RV plan around the free-entry headline. Check the actual camping availability and charges if you want to stay. If you already have an overnight reservation, TPWD says entrance fees are included in that reservation, rather than requiring a separate day pass. Review your own booking instead of buying a duplicate pass.
Our practical choice would be a nearby park with a visit that fits the family’s energy and the vehicle you will take. If the RV is already set up at camp, a smaller day vehicle may simplify the outing. If you must bring your full rig, verify suitable parking before committing. A short walk and picnic can be a worthwhile visit; squeezing a long detour between checkout and the next campground may cost more in time and fuel than the admission savings.

Frisco and Cape Point reopen, with cautions
The National Park Service announced that Frisco and Cape Point campgrounds would reopen at 4 p.m. on October 29. The reopening coincided with the lifting of the Hatteras Island visitor evacuation and the reopening of N.C. Highway 12 near the Pea Island Visitor Center. This is a meaningful change from the earlier disruption, not a blanket statement that every coastal location is back to normal.
The same release warned about Rodanthe beaches, where threatened oceanfront structures and storm-related debris may remain on the beach and in nearby water. Keep away from threatened buildings and debris. NPS also reported that most off-road vehicle ramps had reopened, but its separate beach-access page, updated October 30 at 11:30 a.m. when checked, still distinguishes individual routes and pedestrian-only sections. Check the exact access you intend to use rather than treating a campground reopening as permission to drive anywhere on the beach.
For the camping itself, remember that Frisco and Cape Point do not have utility hookups. The NPS campground page directs reservations and payment through Recreation.gov and says rangers cannot take payment at the campgrounds. Reconfirm the exact dates and site before arrival, especially this late in the season. An open campground is not confirmation that a particular space is available or appropriate for your RV.
We would plan this as a self-contained stay with a separate road check, campsite check and beach check. Confirm your onboard water and power needs before leaving a serviced stop, and keep an alternative overnight option if conditions change. If the main reason for the trip is a specific beach activity, verify that access first. That prevents booking a usable campsite only to discover that the part of the coast you wanted to visit is still restricted.

A five-cent gasoline drop needs perspective
AAA’s October 29 report put the national average for regular gasoline at $4.22 per gallon, down five cents over the preceding week. The organization said crude oil above $100 per barrel was limiting further declines. Treat those as the figures from that dated report, not a live November 1 quote. They also describe regular gasoline, not the diesel price a diesel motorhome or tow vehicle will pay.
The size of the change is easier to understand with a fill-up example. At a fixed 50 gallons, five cents per gallon equals $2.50. At the report’s $4.22 figure, that same illustrative purchase would total $211 before any discounts or other adjustments. Neither number predicts your actual receipt, but the arithmetic shows why a modest weekly drop is welcome without fundamentally changing the cost of a long RV travel day.
Compare the whole fuel stop, not only the cheapest number on a map. For example, saving ten cents on 50 gallons is $5 before the cost of extra driving. If reaching that station means a detour, a tight approach or a difficult exit with your trailer, another stop may be the better choice. Check the fuel your vehicle requires and accessible pump lanes before following a price listing. National averages cannot answer those questions.
For a trip budget, use your recent real-world fuel economy and the distance you actually expect to drive, including local outings. Divide planned miles by that miles-per-gallon figure, then multiply by a relevant local price. Keep some room for variation rather than spending the entire budget on the estimate. AAA also highlighted the earlier evening darkness associated with the clock change. For our travel planning, that is another reason to leave margin for a daylight fuel stop and campground arrival, rather than racing a tight schedule.

LCI keeps its support behind the Patrick deal
LCI Industries announced October 30 that its board had unanimously determined Monomoy Capital Partners’ unsolicited, nonbinding $101-per-share cash proposal was not a superior proposal and was not reasonably likely to become one. The board reiterated support for the proposed Patrick Industries merger. This is a new board decision following the proposal reported earlier in the week, not an announcement that either transaction has closed.
The company continued to describe the first half of 2027 as its expected closing period, subject to shareholder approvals, regulatory approvals and other conditions. Its release also pointed to the November 18, 2026 special shareholder meeting. Those are corporate milestones and expectations. They should not be read as a guaranteed completion date or a promise of lower parts prices, quicker repairs or changed warranty coverage for RV owners.
LCI supplies components through Lippert, which is why this business story matters beyond investors. Our owner takeaway is to keep practical service decisions tied to your actual equipment and current written answers. If you are arranging a repair, retain the component model and serial numbers, the diagnosis, the parts being ordered and the promised follow-up date. A merger headline is not a substitute for any of that information.
Likewise, do not delay a necessary repair because you assume a future corporate combination will simplify it, or buy an RV because someone predicts supplier changes will solve service concerns. Ask the dealer or component support team about the specific job in front of you. We will distinguish later approvals or an actual closing from statements about the intended transaction; this edition reports the October 30 decision, not an investment recommendation.
